Nick's one of the gnarliest dudes I know. Here's a bunch of photos we've stacked and one of the many sit downs we've had. Enjoy.

Krook bonk.

NICK BRIGHT INTERVIEW

A: Nick Bright born in Dunedin, what’s it like being a grom in Dunedin man?

N: Well you’ve got different scenarios for different people, but my grommyhood was sick!

A: Haha rad tell me about that!

N: We had a solid crew of the older generation of skaters in Fairfield, when we all started skating and we were at the bottom of the table youknow?
When we started vibeing with those dudes and you had to fucken shred to hangout.

A: That’s how it works hey.

N: Yeah so once we started getting better the older dudes were like “dude do you wanna come skate the city?!” From Fairfield it was like 20 minutes to Dunedin to the city so we were kinda far out. Fairfield was small place but we had heaps to skate like the skatepark that we made so to get the chance to go skate with these cunts was rad! So when we went to the city we had to shred!

Nosebone.

A: That would make you progress a lot as a grom, tell us about this skatepark you made?

N: That was it, I learned all of my shit like Dan Roberts used to do the most epic melon grabs, fucken double grabs and shit so I was like “Fuck I wanna do that!”
Nigel Pelvin was like super tech and could do anything.

N: We had a tennis court that the older dudes already set up by the time we started skating. There were pallets, boxes, split levels, rails, launch ramps, everything was fucken there bro! Then like right there in the middle of the park there was a 3 foot mini ramp, 5 foot mini ramp with a spine that went into a 7 foot mini ramp. So you would skate street all you want and then go skate mini.
I ended up living right next door to the skatepark, I could see it from my bedroom window dude! Fucken who’s there get up early!
I still used to reverse my car out of the driveway park it next to the park and crank some music and shit.

A:That’s so fucken rad dude.

N: The amount of time I’d spend in that tennis court would be crazy, I’d get up first thing in the morning, straight to the park and then be there till it gets dark, sit around and talk shit. The older dudes would buy you piss for the weekends as well so you’d just sit there and get drunk at night time. Get up in the morning get the broom out, clean it up and shred again!

Crailslide.

A: That’s so sick man, what was it like skating in the city then?

N: Oh epic dude! Dunedin’s sick. It’s an old city so most of the shit is pretty haggard and rough. Dude there’s lots of rad spots. You had the university for stairs gaps and shit.

A: Were they the spots that you’d skate in 95 Revive? (Geoff Campbells Video) Was that filmed in the city a lot?

N: Yep, that was good shit, that was like, only a couple of filming missions!

A: Yeah that was you’re 90’s influenced skating right there.

N: Yeah bro, baggy pants, tiny wheels, tiny boards and shit! That was sick.
The city was filled with like random different shit, it’s not necessarily like go skate a set of stairs. We’d skate like benches and shit, like jump from bench to bench, bumps over them and shit.

A: How old were you when you were filming that?

N: Oh probably like 18? Back in 2003.

A: Fuck dude.. I was 10

N: Haha, you’re making me sound really old! Yeah I’d say like 18, 19 around that time.

Front Rock.

A: It’s interesting how you grow older and you’re constantly changing the way you skate and shit. Obviously there’s a difference between you’re skating back then compared to now. Because I’ve seen old footage of you and it was super surprising for me to see that compared to the way you skate now. What influenced you to skate transition and huck a bit more?

N: I guess it’s the people you hang out with. At that time I was hanging out with the crew from Fairfield. I then moved house’s into the city and started hanging out with Sam Bishop and Morph. Fucken Morph dude, inspiration dude! So it started hanging out with them skating bowls and shit. I could always skate mini ramp sweet but starting to hit corners, going real fast, cutting sick lines and shit, doing doubles with Bishop and Morph. I guess that’s where I got my love for going fast for transition. It was the same thing but a lot more fun. I still love to skate street though offcourse.

A: Oath man and that’s whats rad about it though, you fucken shred at tranny but you’ve still got all your ledge and flip tricks with that 90’s kid inside you that can still do all that shit anyway.

N: Bro some of that shit still scares me though, sometimes I’m like, I used to be able to do that but I’m not sure if I can now, it’s always that first try ay

Ollie up.

A: It naturally evolves like that anyway.

N: Also the other thing is that I never really used to watch skate videos when I was a grom. I can only really remember having the VHS of Misled Youth and Transworld ‘Anthology’. Pretty those two videos and a Thrasher hall of meat were the only videos I had. So I never really started watching videos till I was hanging out with Morph and he’d be like “Skate Trivia!” asking all these questions and shit and I was like “Fuck I’ve gotta watch some shit”

A: So you were definitely influenced just by the local shredders that you would skate with everyday.

N: Yeah in Fairfield, everyday, everyone was there everyday. We had a few undercover spots because of Dunedin’s shit house weather.

Stalefish.

A: What were the undercover spots?

N: What have we got… Coolstores, youknow in 95 revive how he’s filming a line from the car and it was like back nosegrind, nollie heelflip then ollie out over the footpath onto the road, that was coolstores. Heaps of shit. On the other side there was a driveway flat gap, cunts would shred that. Mainly the dry spots would be loading docks. ‘Fruit and Veg’ was like a wee gap, gap to loading dock that drops off on the other side. That was sick.

A: So classic man, skating loading docks and shit!

N: You’d do what you had to! Mobbing flips of them and shit, getting super juiced!

A: Man that honestly sounds like the best environment to grow up skating in.

N: I’d put it down to that for sure.

A: What is the reason behind having your trucks the loosest they could possibly be?!

N: There’s not real reason, I guess it’s motivation to make me go fast because if I go slow I get wheel bite and fall.

A: I’m looking at your trucks just resting in wheel bite right now, what the fuck!

N:You know you’ve got to go fast to burn through that wheel bite and it gets to the point where I can’t be fucked changing my rubbers so I just leave it like that. I also fucken hate tic tacs!.

A: Alright I’ll fucken quote you on that, Brighty hates tic tacs.

N: Fucken butts ay!

Ollie.

A: With skating dude, I think you’re super modest about you’re skating and only skate for yourself, you unleash every single time you skate no matter what! I doesn’t matter who’s watching, it doesn’t matter if there’s a camera, you just shred.

N: I just love it bro, you just gotta do something, you just gotta skate! I read this Cardiel interview and they asked him “Worst thing in skateboarding?” and he’s like “fuck I dunno bro, I hate seeing a bunch of skaters sitting down.” “Just fucken get up and do something!” so I was like fuck yeah, and carved ‘Do Something’ in the front of my trucks.

A:That pretty much concludes it ay, what’s that saying? Oh yeah, Shutup and skate.

N: Damn Right!

A: With the future man, are you content with what you’re doing right now?

N: Hard, grow up a wee bit more, Have a bowl in the backyard for sure.

A: Fuck yeah.
