Nanjing Mission

I just headed to Nanjing in China to do two weeks of demos at the Youth Olympic Games. It was pretty mad. We were to do street and vert demos everyday, and teach the locals how to skate. It was a massive crew from around the world, as well as a bunch of Chinese skaters.

I never ever paid attention to the olympics, but it is such a massive event. Even this being the Youth Olympics it was a hundred times, or even a thousand times bigger than any event I have been to. If you wore this accreditation around your neck you could get into China without a passport or visa. You also had people all over the city come up to you asking if you needed help.

There were a lot of little idiosyncrasies that were different at an olympic event. We were told that we couldn't have any branding on our boards that wasn't the original graphic on the board. I had to take my stickers off my board. A bit strange, but it actually felt rad to not have any stickers on my board for the first time in about 25 years.

We had to go to a briefing on the first day when we found out about this kind of stuff. The olympics are really different to any other event and this is where they explained everything about what was expected of us.

The first night we were there was the opening ceremony. It was seriously packed with more crew than I have ever seen. China is full of crew.

The opening ceremony was mental. Word on the street is they spent 200 million on it. The first part was watching a flag from each of the 250 countries come out, that was like watching paint dry. The second part was the opposite of that.

The first day of skating was fun. I was impressed to see Chris Cole and Sean Malto there. This is Thomas Vintr from the Czech republic wearing in the flatbar...

I can't remember this dudes name but he is a Chinese street skater. The Chinese street skaters are super tech and mad at skating ledges, this is a lengthy bs 180 to switch nose grind...

Actually that last move could of been a switch nose grind 180 out come to think of it. On the first day there was only three vert skaters, me and two Japanese blokes. They had mad power and went really big. I noticed they had Burton stickers on their helmets so I asked them if they snowboarded, they did. They were mad snowboard pros. This guy here Ayumu won a silver medal at the last winter Olympics in super pipe at 14 years old.

TYhe mad thing about the Olympics is when it goes down they spruce up an entire city. this, and lots of other mad stuff got built just for the Olympics.

Theres loads of spots wherever you go in any city in China. Nanjing was no different.

The funny thing about China is every problem no matter how small gets a group discussion. These guys came to tell me I had to change rooms at my hotel. Every time I replied to something they said they discuss it and then one replies back. It doesn't matter if you are asking for someone in China to help you with some Nuclear fission, or just with directions to get to the fish and chip shop, its always followed by a discussion. And actually come to think of it there is no fish and chip shops in China.
