ok so this is my last year of school and i am really towards pursuing a career in skateboard design next year. All of my subjects have been art based these past three years, and have been drawing for most of my life. If anyone could help on getting started or what i would need to do to try and pursue this career it would be much appreciated. BTW i am currently out of action for about 2 weeks because i blew out my wrist so i haven't done any recent drawings.

if you would like to see my earlier drawings, my email is in my profile... cheers Robot.

Maybe look at diversifying a little. My guess is there are 0 people currently making more than the minimim wage in Australia designing skateboard graphics.

I know a fair few graphic artists that do tons of work for USA clients over the net... email some US companies some samples maybe (but don't make them huge files as that can bum peeps out).

I`ve been lucky enough to do a few graphics for different companies, but never really anything you could make a living off.

Doing boards is more for the pure fun of having boards out there with your work on them.

Just keep doing what you`re doing, and push your art around anywhere you can.

Best of luck to you too..

Hey Robot Chicken

I currently do a lot of graphic design for GMTA, alongside board designs i find myself designing/illustrating for wheels, tees, catalogues, stickers and a whole bunch of things.

If you are an illustrator by trade it might be worth doing a short course on prepress on how to get things print ready as it is vital for a lot of your design work. I came out of uni and went straight into a printing shop as their resident graphic designer for 2 years, and i learnt a heap about getting design work/illustrations print ready.

I find that making a living off graphic design you really need to get out there and start freelancing and getting a bit of work here and there, but as drew says, it is really worth being diverse and having a wide range of skills. For instance, at the moment i am working on a website, some tees and a couple of catalogues. Even though i don't advertise myself as a website designer, i still have the basic skills so i was able to pick up the job for some extra moolah.

Anyways, it is tough at the start, but if its your dream then commit. Word of mouth is the best way of advertising as well as having an online portfolio. You will find that most clients have a pretty clear idea of what they want so most of the time your creativity is limited. Oh yer and be prepared to work weekends and after hours!

Hope that helps. Email me in my profile if you need anything else.
