The Skateistan team of volunteers will be representing the project at Bondi Beach this weekend to raise awareness for Afghan skateboarders at Sydney’s annual World Cup skateboarding competition ‘Bowl- a- rama’.

Fresh from filming in Kabul, Skateistan representative Sharna Nolan will be running a project information stall and tent at a number of industry events and at the Bowlarama competition on Saturday 21st of February.

Working with professional skateboarder Morgan Campbell, the pair are hoping to secure corporate support from a number of industry sectors. Sharna will be available for interviews and answering questions on Friday and Saturday. She will also be launching a trailer for a global documentary that is currently being filmed about the project.

“We are looking forward to showing the industry and general public that skateboarding can be a powerful tool for communication, even in war zones. Skateboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and the US. We bring a fresh approach to the industry that is socially aware and provides a voice to skateboarders in developing and war torn countries.”
Sharna Nolan, Project Officer, instructor and Australian representative

Skateistan will be showcasing over 35 award winning images at the “Love and Guts” art show which opens Wednesday night at The Beach Road, 71 Beach Rd, Bondi Beach, and will be running for four nights.

Images will be for sale with all proceeds going towards building Kabul’s first skate park, commencing in April. Limited edition skateboard decks, embossed with the Skateistan logo, will also be for sale on the night and at various fundraising activities over the weekend.

Skateistan would like to thank Oakley, Chad Ford (event organizer) and Slam magazine for their support in getting to the event.

Skateistan is Afghanistan’s first co-educational skateboarding school. Established in May 2007, the program offers free skateboarding classes for all youth in Kabul through a team of dedicated international and Afghan volunteers. With funding assistance from the governments of Germany, Norway and Canada, the program is about to build Kabul’s first indoor skate park, allowing us to reach over 500 students in 2009.

"Farewell to Jas - a good friend

The Skateistan crew would like to pay tribute to our close friend Jason Bresler who was killed with two foreigners while arriving at work yesterday morning in Kabul. In the 2 years we have known him, Jas has been an awesome friend, an even better motorcycle mechanic and a true believer in our project and the capacity of Afghans to help themeselves. We will fondly remember his famous rooftop BBQs - where he made both Afghans and internationals feel equally welcome - and our dozens of motorcycle journeys together for a long time to come. Jas - Respect and peace. Our deepest condolences to friends and family in Kabul and Sth Africa."

I now have renewed respect for anyone going there to help these people because a world where a skater gets shot just going to work like that is not a world anyone should have to endure! Play it safe over there dudes!
