Relearning to Skate vert again after 28 years

Hey Guys

I've just starting skating again after more than 28 years and I'm worse than useless!

I was expecting to pick up my old vert skills quite quickly based on the fact that I was still able to 50/50, backside disaster, rock'n roll, rock to fakey and frontside smith grind Mona Vales vert ramp and all on a borrowed board deck about 5-7 years ago!

Injuries thus far since starting a few weeks back.
2 cracked ribs + bruised sternum
Blew out my knee
Multiple bruised ankles \ feet
Possible fractured bones in both hands

Everyone included my doctor thinks its simply too old to skate at 46 having stopped completely this past 28 years

Well I'm not so sure or convinced its age related as to why I'm so terrible...

I believe I've working out what the problem is but I'm not sure there's an easy fix other than learning to skate again from scratch.

So I used to skate without my coke-bottle glass's plus I only have one working eye and that eye was pretty blind.

About two years ago I got cataracts in my one simi working eye resulting in cataract surgery and to my amazement I've now got 20 version in my good eye....
My theory is that with my brand new lens all the aspect ratios and everything for that matter has changed and my body can’t work or get used to the update.......

Anyone dealt with this type of issue and does the brain finally work it out and the skills kick back in again or do I have relearn everything?

Vert is dead just like this site.
Maybe try some painkillers and WD40

^^^So bad, but so funny and exactly why this forum died...

Anyway, re having to relearn everything / struggling with skateboarding in general when older, it is a funny thing, but a lot of people just cannot take up where they left off, resulting in a lot more injuries, or worse injuries than when they were younger.

I am not familiar with issues with vision (I was a fly in / fly out for almost ten years, and my balance is all kinds of wrong from the multiple ear infections / issues, which has caused me to limit my skating to mellow and small ramps only and leave behind most of the other bigger ramp things I used to do) but regardless of any of that, the body gets older and doesn't move like it used to and in turn doesn't spring back like it used to, so much more prone to the types of injuries you would never have when younger. Stretching, other exercise and being fit really helps a lot too.

The type of setup you have can also affect what you are able to do or not do. Some people have tried to set up the same ride they had when they were skating last, but for most getting back into it, a bigger more simple rig works better, or there are a lot of normal concave and shaped options in larger sizes, as well as all the old skool reissues with single kicks or minimal concave.

There are also a lot more older dudes getting around and skating so getting in with them can be the best thing to happen as well.

Hey Mark

Yeah I was riding my old nineties deck, 7.0 with matching Ventures.... way to small for a 6ft 90kg guy

I've now got a new rig 8.5 and matching indys trucks

Its help quite a bit but my progression is still painful slow :(

Do you skate other ramps too, or just the big ones?

Skating smaller ramps can sometimes be a good thing, whatever size works, eg 4 ft easy, 6 ft moderate, 8 ft + more of a challenge, compared to 10 ft + which is standard vert.

Just a thought anyway.

I only travelled around Sydney for work for a while, so don't really know what else there is in the mid height range of about 8 ft, but parks or ramps that come to mind that are not gone and hopefully not too far away from you if you are northern beach area inlcude:

Not sure if you get in to skate shops, but some of those guys might be able to direct you to others, or special private ramps, of which there are always lots no one knows about except the special few.

Boarders at Brookvale is a good start anyway.

You might want to check re Monster...

According to fairly recent video, other info and social media, it looks like it is back up and running again.
