Vandalising skateparks to improve them?

Justin Sawell 13:25 10/Nov/05

What's the vibe on doing some stealth mods to a park once the council or Chad have finished?

I'm thinking of Chatswood (nearly got hurt bad this arvo trying grab airs off the Quarter Pipe) where there are gardens/barriers that are dangerously close to the coping.

Apart from "Forget anything else and just go skate Homebush" - what do you think?

Forget anything else and just go skate Homebush.

Move to Queensland.

Justin Uffweed 14:14 10/Nov/05

where they early, pre, stinkbug or late grabs?

Justin Uffweed 14:15 10/Nov/05

only early grabs allowed in QLD, no late bullshit

Justin Sawell 14:38 10/Nov/05

late grabs - if you've seen chatswood, the line goes down a straight ramp, over the hump, down another straight ramp towards a 5 or 6-foot quarter pipe attached to the bowl.

I'm launching up the curve, getting about 10cm of air and just brushing the deck with my fingers before landing and having to throw myself to the left to get through a narrow gap in the handrailing.

The vandalism I'm pondering is to cut a section off the handrail so there is more space to land - just like sawing the ladder out of a pool before skating it. Bring on Homebush.

Easy -- don't do it.

Skating obstacles is how you improve as a skater. That's what the ramps etc are there for - otherwise it's just a roller-rink.

Learn to skate with said obstacles and you'll improve ten-fold. Destroying the surrounding areas because you can't land your trick is just stupid -- either go skate somewhere else or go home.

Justin Sawell 16:35 10/Nov/05

I agree with you up to a point, CG.

The extremity of my suggestion would be similar to saying "It's OK for BMXers to ride across the flat of any half pipe while the skaters are on it because they will improve as skaters by dodging the obstacles".

There comes a point where obstacles stop being an aid and become a hinderance (BMXers for instance). That point is where my agreement ends.

Justin Uffweed 16:59 10/Nov/05

i don't know about this sawing a ladder out a pool bullshit, if there's a ladder in a pool you praise the lord nigga

i'm not sure i like the sounds of your modifications, nor would others (skaters or whoever)

the type of modifications you should be thinking about putting into parks go more along the lines of vert walls, tomb stones, wooden additions, rainbows, mega ramps etc, are we on the same page here or what eh?

mosu101 18:01 10/Nov/05

leave the rail there but make sure you tie CG to it. that way if you do hit it you have the satisfaction of knowing that there are actually uses to rollerbladers other than target practice

..Laz.. 18:27 10/Nov/05

hahah word.
justin and mosu, sumed that up good.

Justin Sawell 14:25 11/Nov/05

mosu101: You may be pleased to know that today, it was BMXers, not booters I nearly landed on.

Not a nice feeling, in that instant where you can tell it ain't right, and there's no place to go but into the chain & sprocket of the bike.

J.U. - I've seen guys cut the ladder out of a pool because it was right in the middle of the carve/grind area. I totally agree with your later sentiments, but all I'm discussing is to remove a 1 metre section of handrail from the landing zone. Same issue.

The main culprit is the one at the top of the pic. Imagine you were to charge down the bank out of shot on the right, over the hump and then down the other bank visible bryond the half-pipe.

Cross the flat and try to pull air off the quarter pipe at top left of pic = get impaled on the railing. There is simply no landing zone for that QP.
