Layon Sk8Park ACT!

Dave Pang 20:43 02/Sep/06

CBR Folk will be stoked to hear that the ACT Government is forking out a wonderful $90,000 to restore the site of the temporay Civic skatepark and move the prefab ramps to Layon.

The equates to close to $150,000 (or more) for that wonderful, challenging structure.

The Layon locals will be stoked.

Details in this weeks Cronicle newspaper!

Hey Phil

Good stuff. I am sure more things would go our way if more people were like you. A simple letter when written in a logical and polite way can be quite powerful

Phils post from before.......

Oi CBR heads, did anyone see the article? It seemed to say that the ACTskateboarding association had something to do with the consultation. If they mean the Canberra skateboard association of which I and others were involved, well we folded at least 12 months ago. If they don't mean us then who are these people? Anyone know? Let me make it clear that we (Canberra skateboard association) heard of this idea ages ago and Potty and I both trashed it to their faces and they are now going to do it anyway. here's a letter I wrote to the Chronicle about why I think Lanyon got ripped off, please have a read if you're interested and if you agree post away, post away even if you don't.

Good afternnon

My name is Phillip Dalton. I read with some interest the recent article regarding the governments initiative to place a skatepark in the Lanyon Area. I am past president of the Canberra Skateboarding Association (2003-2005) and I writing in with an interest and also in an effort to clarify some information contained within your recent article (southside chronicle-29 Aug 2006, pg 8). I am hoping to offer, some clarification and some other viewpoints and am also hoping to have some queries answered.

I am concerned about the consultation process as indicated by Minister Hargreaves for a number of reasons. Firstly I must ask, is the Minister meaning to indicate that consultation has taken place with/through the Canberra skateboard Association as opposed to the ACT skateboarding Association?

If this is the case it should be known that the Canberra Skateboard Association has not operated in more than 12 months. This is for numerous reasons however it was mainly due to being unable to effectively lobby for change in the skatepark maintenance and approval processes. If the Minister does mean the old organisation of which I was president, then there is no possible way that we were involved with any recent consultations. You can clearly see the numerous questions the Ministers assertion of consultation creates, ethical or otherwise.

Further to the above fact. The organisation, whilst operating, was made aware of the idea to move the current glebe park set up to Lanyon. It was discussed at a consultation meeting with David Moyle, myself and the association secretary. Mr Moyle, a senior asset manager with Urban Services was told in no uncertain terms that we DID NOT think that this was a suitable remedy for the situation in Lanyon. Our position was, and remained, that the skatepark is of sub-standard nature and should not be duplicated at all. The fact remains that the Glebe/Lanyon skatepark is not of a construction that lends itself to progression and improvement of a skateboarders skill. the ramps are prefabricated of uniform height and width and do not offer the multitude of directional changes achievable in every other skate park in Canberra. These kinds of skateparks are ridiculed in the skateboard community as "leggo block parks" for obvious reasons.

The other major concern is the price of this skatepark. Consider these facts as I understand them and as quoted to me in my capacity as president. The skatepark at Glebe cost $50,000. Add in the cost of the government having to keep Civic skatepark open because of the botched consultation there of $60,000 and then add $90,000 for moving it to Lanyon and expanding it every so slightly. We are getting above $200,000 for a sub standard product. Quite frankly I see this as an intense waste of money on an asset that was supposed to be a temporary in the first place. Is this the best practice asset management the government is continually espousing?

I think the most disturbing thing about this skatepark is the fact that by accepting it into Laynon, you run the dangerous possibility that Laynon will be stuck with it. When the skateboarders of Lanyon cry out for a better facility, the cry from the government will be "You have one". This has been evidenced in Shires and townships and cities across Australia. Once you have a substandard facility, all obligations to constituents will considered to have been met and more often than not you are stuck with the facility for good. It is true that some will say that "well something is better than nothing", the logic in this statement however is flawed. If you asked for a house to be built and you got half a house you would not accept it, to say skateboarders should is illogical..

Thank you for your time and allowing me to put my views forward. I hope to hear from you and please feel free to contact me on XXXXXXXXXXXX if I can offer any further clarification or be of further assistance. I will be writing the Minister in a separate mail.

kindest regards

Excellent Phil!

Lucky Phil 17:00 06/Sep/06

that's the problem jemz, they don't directly say it but they give a very distinct impression by using tricky PR "non-words". If this sets a precedent we should all be very worried., well not me, we got the Creek.
