Dear Mr Brown,

Thankyou for your email of 26 November 2008 about the Canberra Skateboarding Association's proposal entitled "Recreation for Canberra" requesting this proposal be considered for funding allocated for the ACT by the Commonwealth Government for local community infrastructure.

Your Association's proposal for a new multi-faceted youth facility for Canberra is currently being considered, along with a number of other projects which comply with the scope of the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/local/pdf/RLCIP50mGuidelines201108_4pm.pdf

I can advise you that a decision will be announced in the near future. Thank you for raising this matter with me.

Yours sincerely,

MAJOR UPGRADES FOR EDDISON AND GLEBE PARKS
Published: December 23, 2008, 8:00 am
Section: Jon Stanhope, MLA | Media Releases

The ACT Government will use the $2 million grant from the Commonwealth Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program allocated to the ACT for a dedicated youth recreational facility for Eddison Park and upgrades to Glebe Park, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope announced today.

Mr Stanhope said the Government would consult the community on what they would like to see in the new $1.4 million youth facility, which could include a skate plaza, play equipment and a performance area.

The remaining $600,000 will be directed to improvements to Glebe Park, already identified in the Glebe Park Master Plan (2008), including a shade structure over the play area and a purpose built stage for major events.

"Eddison Park, Canberra's most central district park, is the ideal choice for this grant, because of its close proximity to schools, housing and shopping facilities.

"Canberra's youth would benefit from this multi-use recreational facility which could include a performance stage for events such as Youth Week, art display areas, skate facilities and play equipment such as a climbing net. Interactive areas such as volleyball and basketball courts and a flying fox could also be part of the new recreational facility.

"The ACT Government will consult the community about how they would like to use the youth facility before any decisions on infrastructure and upgrades are made.

"The ACT Government is committed to ensuing Canberra is a highly desirable place to live, work and play and upgrading Eddison and Glebe Parks is a key part of achieving this goal.

"I commend the Rudd Government for its initiative in allocating funds to not only develop community infrastructure but to also stabilise the economy during these uncertain times," Mr Stanhope said.

Community consultation has already taken place as part of the recent Eddison Park and Glebe Park master planning processes. Further consultation with key user groups and the community will allow other interested people to tell the Government what they want from the Eddison Park youth recreational facility.

Works are expected to be completed by late 2009.

Further information about the consultation process will be available online at www.tams.act.gov.au in early 2009.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Public Consultation 4pm - 6pm Eddison Park in Woden Wednesday 28th January.

A youth recreation facility was proposed for eddison Park funded by the Federal Governments economic stimulus package to local government. The ACT received $2mill, of this $1.4mill will be spent on this facility. This funding must be spent by September 2009, which is a very tight timeframe.

Please read on for some background on the project.

Eddison park is the most centrally located district park in Canberra a location and is highly accessible being close to buses, parking, shopping and youth facilities. PCL prepared a Master Plan for Eddison Park in 2008 to encourage greater utilisation of the park and to guide future improvements. The Master Plan identifies Eddison Park as a potential site for an innovative regional youth recreation plaza. Over the last 5 years multi-use facilities have begun to be developed across Australia. Much of these are derived from a skatepark street plaza basis with creative obstacles designed to bring a new aesthetic look and flavour for youth and users in addition to catering for young people who are not skaters. The youth recreation plazas developed combined art, music and interactive features to bring a unique feel to these designs

PCL Have engaged Convic Design to develop Preliminary sketch plans for the facility. This work includes consultation and will be completed in February.
